What To Look For In a Home – Room By Room

Share This Post:

When viewing a home, buyers tend to look at the big picture that the home has to offer – they ask questions such as “is this home big enough?”, “are there enough bedroom and bathrooms?”, “is the backyard large enough?”. And of course, these questions are incredibly important, but there are also specific questions you must ask as a buyer in order to get all the details of a home right. Here’s a little checklist of the questions you should ask when viewing a home.

Living Room and Family Room.

The living room is probably the most important room as for many family members it is where most of their time is spent. You need to know several things about the living room as well as the family room. Are they large enough to fit all the furniture? Are the rooms conducive to family get-togethers and entertaining? Do we need a separate living room and family room?

Kitchen.

Here’s another very important space in your home. Is it important to have enough space to eat comfortably in the kitchen as well as the dining room? Does the kitchen have all the cupboard and other storage space you need? Will your fridge fit? Is the counter space enough for preparing quantities of meals that fit the family? How important are stainless steel appliances to you?

Bathroom.

Whether you share a home with several family members or live on your own – two main things you need to ask about bathrooms is the number and space. Is the main floor bathroom uncomfortably small? Does the ensuite bathroom have all the features you desire, such as a large tub and/or separate shower? Do you need double sinks? How many bathrooms do you need for your family?

Bedrooms.

Is the master bedroom large enough to fit the bed and other furniture? Does it have the closet space you need? Are the other bedrooms large enough for your needs? In such cases, it’s always a good idea to ask your agent to get a copy of the floorplan so that you can get a better sense of whether your existing furniture will fit well!

Storage Space.

This is particularly important if you tend to have many items that you may be saving or if you’re shopping for a condo.

Does the storage space or locker have the space you need? How much storage space do you need? Is an attic or a basement enough to cover your storage needs?

Closets.

There can never be enough closet space! But you will need to ask yourself whether there are enough closets for your needs and belongings? Is there a linen closet? Would you need to build an additional closet space for the home?

Garage.

Homeowners use the garage for more than just cars. If you plan to use this space for storage or hobbies, check that the garage will be suitable for those purposes.
