The Deep Clean: 5 Tips For Disinfecting Your Home

There’s nothing quite like a spotless home, but pulling out the cleaning supplies has taken on even greater significance in the last few months. Due to coronavirus concerns, many of us have been thinking about how to not only clean our living spaces, but disinfect them too. That means going beyond washing germs away to actually kill them—a step that can help further ensure your family’s health and safety.

Here are five tips for disinfecting your home during the COVID-19 pandemic…

1) Focus on frequently-touched objects

It may sound obvious, but the household objects we touch most are often the ones we clean the least. At a time when we’re all dramatically limiting our trips outside, it’s important to be mindful of the germs we might be bringing back in with us when we do. Of course, you can’t scour every inch of your home each day. What you can do is wipe down doorknobs, fridge handles, remote control buttons, and other frequently-touched objects with disinfectant spray or wipes.

2) Use a bleach solution

Unfortunately, your access to potent germ-killing products may depend on whether you’re in the right grocery store at the right time. The good news is, you can make your own highly-effective alternative at home. If you have a bottle of bleach hanging around, simply mix one-third of a cup of it with a gallon of water. This versatile solution can be used on everything from your sinks to your countertops to your floors. For best result, allow surfaces to air dry after washing.

3) Ditch the damp towels

Germs like the coronavirus tend to hang around longer in damp environments than they do elsewhere. That’s why it’s so important to wash used towels and bathroom mats regularly, and at a high temperature. Consider using bleach for whites, and a disinfecting detergent (like Lysol Laundry Sanitizer) for colourful garments if you have it. Remember to be especially diligent about replacing hand towels, which may get touched by more than one person in a short period of time.

4) Consider disinfectant sprays

Some items are harder to wipe down or scour than others. Mattresses and couches without removable slipcovers are good examples. Fortunately, if you have the right disinfectant spray, there’s no need to neglect these surfaces. Purell, Lysol, and Clorox products are all known to kill a wide range of germs, if you can get your hands on them. Laundering linens can also go a long way towards disinfecting your bedrooms.

5) Don’t forget your devices

When you do venture out into the world, you probably bring your smartphone with you. That could mean more opportunities for germs to attach themselves to this crucial device. While you certainly can’t douse it in liquid, cleaning it with a disinfectant wipe or microfiber cloth dabbed with rubbing alcohol will do the trick. The same goes for your keyboard and mouse, which you’re bound to touch frequently.

The coronavirus has injected more uncertainty into our day-to-day lives, but there are steps you can take to achieve peace of mind during the pandemic. By cleaning and disinfecting your living space regularly, you can reduce some of your anxiety—and help keep your family members safe.
