How to Beat the Winter Blues in Toronto this Season

Is it me, or does it seem like someone has poured molasses on the clock during the winter season this year?

Pandemic lockdowns, freezing temperatures and endless snowstorms have made winter seem extra long. With everything going on, it’s not surprising that some people are experiencing a touch of the winter blues.

We put together this list of tips to help you get through the season and maybe even start to enjoy the winter.

Supplement with Vitamin D

If you often feel depressed during the colder months, it may be worth a visit to your doctor to check your Vitamin D levels. Your body produces Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, which explains why a deficiency can sometimes happen in the winter. When it’s cold outside, you tend to stay indoors more. When you do venture out, you’re covered head to toe with a coat, hat, gloves and scarf, making it impossible for your body to absorb the sunshine. Your doctor might recommend supplementing with Vitamin D during the winter to help give your mood a boost.

Try an SAD Lamp

According to the Mayoclinic, seasonal depressive disorder (SAD) is a legitimate medical condition. It often begins in late Autumn and can last all the way through the winter months. Symptoms include feeling sad, fatigued and moody. No one knows for sure why this happens, but it’s likely due to the reduced sunlight in the winter.

The good news is that for many people, the treatment might be as simple as getting a light therapy box. The idea is that the light helps your body produce more melatonin and other brain chemicals to offset your depression and brighten your mood. When using an SAD lamp, be sure to follow all precautions and to protect your eyes. Your doctor can help you decide whether a light therapy box is for you and what style you should choose for maximum benefits.

Treat Yourself

It may be tempting to hibernate under the covers until the winter is over, but it’s essential to get out and socialize as much as possible. Even meeting a friend at a cozy coffee shop can feel invigorating. Or you can set up a regular movie night with your friends or family or even book a weekend getaway. You don’t have to go very far, and you’ll be amazed at how much a change of scenery can boost your energy levels and enthusiasm.

If you’re the type of person who just really hates the snow, there are still ways to get out and enjoy the winter season. Why not visit a recreational centre with a heated pool and hot tub to chase away the winter chill? Toronto also has several indoor gardens you can stroll around in. The scent of the blooms will make you feel like you’re on vacation and help you remember that Spring is right around the corner.

Looking for a few ways to enjoy winter while staying warm? Here are some neat ideas to keep you cozy:

Do Some Spring Cleaning

If you can’t stomach the idea of leaving home in the cold weather, make the most of your time indoors by getting your house ready for Spring. Get your cleaning gloves on and crank up the music. The first step should be to get rid of the clutter that you no longer use or need.

One of our favourite cleaning tips may sound strange, but it works: Don’t hesitate to make a mess while cleaning up the mess. Throw all of your clutter into a pile in one room of your house. With everything all in one spot, it’s easier to sort through. Plus, you’re committed at that point.

Discard or donate everything that you no longer need. Find a new, logical home for everything else.

When the clutter is gone, your house suddenly seems brighter and more spacious. It can feel like a heavy weight has lifted off your shoulders.

Now it’s time to dust, vacuum and scrub your house from top to bottom. A clean and sparkling house does wonders for your soul. Best of all, now that all this deep cleaning is out of the way, you’re ready to welcome the Spring with open arms.

Commit to Enjoying Winter

Once any medical reasons for depression have been ruled out, one of the best ways to beat the winter blues is to have fun.
